6 reasons why UK businesses use 0844 numbers
Many UK businesses use 0844 phone numbers as a point of contact for their customers. 0844 numbers are known as non-geographic telephone numbers; like 0845 numbers and 0800 numbers etc. However, the primary difference between 0844 numbers and these other numbers is that many organisations use them to make some money back on the calls they receive and to help them fund additional services. It’s for this reason that 0844 numbers are often used as technical support helplines, for example. Here are 6 reasons why UK businesses use 0844 numbers:
1) 0844 numbers are non-geographic - meaning that they don’t have traditional 01/02 area codes. This means that the location of organisations that use them are not made explicit and they can expect to receive calls from outside of their area (e.g. regionally and even nationally).
2) Organisations can see their busy periods, missed calls and the geogrpahic location of their callers with online call statistics that work in conjunction with 0844 numbers.
3) People can change where they receive their calls instantly. So, if they wanted to receive calls to their 0844 number on their mobile, they can simply change the settings online and activate this instantly.
4) Businesses can receive a payment of 4p per minute on the calls they receive to their 0844 numbers.
5) People can handpick a highly memorable 0844 number that their customers will recall with ease.
6) Organisations can keep 0844 numbers for life. Their 0844 number won’t ever have to change again - saving them time, money and hassle if they relocate.
The popularity of 0844 numbers has increased of late and this could be attributed to Ofcom’s recent review of 0870 numbers. The communications watchdog has now stipulated that calls to 0870 numbers should cost no more than a national rate call (unless specifically advertised otherwise). This has meant that revenue sharing opportunities using 0870 numbers have become more difficult and people are naturally looking at 0844 numbers instead as the ideal alternative.
