Business Networking Tips and Hints
Networking Tip: The Most Effective 30 Second Self Introduction Ever Heard!
How is there a referral in every elevator speech?
After reading this article, self introductions at business networking events will get you referrals from every event. EVERY TIME, WITHOUT EXCEPTION! A bold statement? You betcha. Here’s how.
For this to work, you’ll need three things:
1. A note pad
2. An eagerness to help others
3. A follow-up database
What you need to do is: Listen with the intention to help each person who introduces them self with a referral.
A quick distinction about referrals. Not every referral needs to be a customer. Referrals can also include:
- Networking organizations, other than the one that you are attending
- Resources that may be helpful to them
- Books that may help them (This is my personal favorite!)
- Partners that are in complementary businesses that will refer them
- Customers
- Expertise and Advice
- Be creative and let you imagination run wild
You see, 95% of the people attending a business networking event are thinking about what to say in their 30 second self introduction. A lot of people are afraid to speak in public and are having a minor panic attack waiting their turn to introduce them self. Regardless of how “good or bad” the elevator pitch, you’ll get an idea of what they do in their business and will get an intuitive sense of how to help them grow their business.
Take a note for everyone that attends the event. Write down their name and what comes to mind during their self introduction to help them grow their business. After the meeting, mixer or business networking event contact the person and share the referral. Take a few minutes to connect and get to know the person. Where appropriate, add them to your database and newsletter list.
You will find every business networking event produces 1 to 3 direct referrals for every 20 people you directly contact using this method. These leads will typically show up within 45 to 60 days. You may want to try it just to see what happens. By helping others, you will feel better and be more energized.
Business Networking and Business Events Only. Why is that?
Only Business and Business Networking Events are Published by NetworkingEventFinders.
Here is Why:
- Our passions are Networking and Business
- We are very talented Networkers and Business owners
- We don’t want to go through all the single’s events, concerts and festivals to get to the business networking events
- We’re older and our “partying days” are mostly over
- We’re don’t want to attend business networking events that are really MLM recruiting events, buiness seminars and opportunity meetings.
- While searching for business networking events we found way too many really cool website that sucked up all our time
- We don’t want to register and give up our email address to get business networking event information
- We got tired of “self interest” sites where publishers mainly promoted their own events, programs and seminars
A global business networking websites, where it’s FREE to find and to promote local networking events, is what Mindy Selinger and Terry Hall set out to build 18 months ago. Networking Event Finders was born. Our beta site launched in October 2008 and our full launch happened in March 2009.
Like any business, we’ve learned a heck of a lot about what works and doesn’t work for an on-line business. Most important, we’ve learned that Networking Event Finders is needed, now more than ever. There is a need for an independent publisher of Business and Business Networking Events and we’re filling that need. We’ve proven the concept. We are able to design, maintain and promote a network of 60+ business networking events websites. Over 800 people a day are looking for what we publish. Not too bad in just over a year. If 2010 is anything like 2009, our popularity is positioned to explode! We could use your help.
This is a Win/Win opportunity for everyone involved. We have three way you can help:
1. Let your networks know that we’re here and invite them to add their networking events to our calendars.
2. Consider being a Local Editor for your networking guide.
3. Help us find advertisers.
By assisting us in any of these 3 areas, you will help us improve our publication, offer more and a bigger variety of business networking events and increase the speed of our development. We’ll all win with greater exposure to a bigger audience and more opportunities to grow and increase our businesses.
Maryland, Moms Inc. & Business Networking
Three years ago Nancy Daniel started Moms Inc.org, a business Networking group for Moms who have a home based business or want to start one.
During this past summer I received several inquiries looking for kid friendly business networking groups for work at home moms in Denver so I put out a national query. I didn’t get much of a response. So I’m thrilled to know about this one. By putting this local group in our national newsletter and on the website I’m hoping to shine light on more small groups like this. We want to get them on the calendar and give them some exposure!
Stay-at-home moms running home-based businesses face unique obstacles. They are striving to succeed in two unrelated and frequently conflicting endeavors, and they crave a place where they can go for support and guidance. Answering a need that more and more women are experiencing, are groups like Moms Inc. Moms, Inc. is connecting moms with home based businesses with the resources and knowledge of women who are making similar lifestyle choices. Most Moms, Inc. chapters have one very informal gathering per month. Annual dues are minimal and meetings are free. Kids are always welcome at the meetings. In just three short years membership has blossomed from a handful to three chapters in Maryland. With additional chapters being planned in other states. Moms, Inc. is for networking, support & friendship. Family are Moms, Inc. members first priority, but they also take their businesses seriously. If you know of any other such small, grass-roots group please leave a comment and tell us about them!
