Model Train collecting is the kind of hobby where artistic and scientific skills come together to create an elaborate structure of miniaturized and animated enjoyment.
Unlike the battery operated toy trains made of plastic, model trains are more meticulous and complex. Model trains are a lot pricier and if you are somebody who is thinking of making model trains a hobby, you will find out the key things you have to be familiar with in this article.
A model train is still considered as a toy by lots of individuals. But these are not the type of toy for toddlers since operating model trains needs appropriate maintenance and some technical know-how for each bit to stay operational and run suitably as time go by.
Collectors should also have knowledge of the model train market in particular. Particularly the range of sizes that are built in a different way and how popular each one is.
They are known as scales and gauges. Two of the most well-renowned and well-received scales are 0 and H0 type scales. These scales are considered medium in sizes where 0 is 1:48 and H0 is 1:87. H0 is much smaller than the 0 scale in case you don’t know and the H0 scale is by far the most popular scale in the US, Japan, and most of Europe. 0 scale, meanwhile, is the most widespread in the UK as well as other parts of Europe. So which one’s more popular? It’s none other than H0. Of course, the size of your tracks should go along with the scale of your choosing.
It is up to you which scale you choose but it is advisable to choose the scale which is more popular on your region as availability is the key in order for your model train collection to get bigger.
Just like the actual thing, the heart of a train is the locomotive. The two available model locomotives are diesel and steam which based on the real ones.
The attributes from the real, life-sized steam locomotives can also be seen and heard from model steam locos such as chimney-steam and whistle noise. The only catch is, model steam locos are more expensive than diesel.
Diesel locos cost lesser and run quieter than steam locomotives and they regularly come in 4-axle or 6-axle. The layout of the track will determine the number of axles you should get because the curve of the track will have an influence. The smaller the radius of the track’s bend, say 18 inches, a 4-axle will be more appropriate while a radius of 22 inches is the minimum for a 6-axle.
Last but not least is the electrical wiring of the model trainThe electrical configuration of a model railway is the last focal piece for this form of hobby. Whether you choose to go for analog or digital , a power pack will be important as well as the configuration of the wires.
More technical skill is needed for an analog setup since you will do the configuration of the track’s wiring. This includes wiring parts of track’s to running the train’s speed, pace, movement and route.
An easier control option is by going digital. You will need a DCC (Digital Command Control) module to control each of your model trains movements, speed and course. For individuals who does not have the expertise in electric wiring, going digital will be your best choice.
Additionally, decals and sceneries such as stations, tunnels, etc. add to the general satisfaction and feel of model trains collections.
