Posted on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 in Brandnew

Does your garden have roses that you want to keep but you don’t know how to prepare roses for winter? Roses require having some protection throughout the cold months of the year and the amount of protection will vary depending on how cold your climate gets each year. It will also depend on the type of roses that you may have as the Rugosa roses happen to be quite strong and can withstand some pretty chilly temperatures without any protection.

When you are first learning how to prepare roses for winter you need to determine the type of roses that you have first. This will allow you to know the amount of protection that they will need throughout the winter months as some roses are stronger than others. Hybrid tea roses usually need a little extra protection then Rugosas roses, but if you aren’t entirely sure just go above and beyond for your protection to be safe.

Once you know the type of roses you have you’ll want to determine the lowest temperature that your region gets on average each year. The protection level will vary with each climate and region as each may experience warmer or colder temperatures throughout the winter months.

When you are preparing your roses for the winter you will want to consider placing approximately 5 inches of soil on to the base of your rose patch and if you live in cooler parts of the US you will also want to place another foot onto the mound after the regions frost date. You may have to protect your roses a bit more if you live in colder climates so do as much protection as you can if you live in very cold climates to help your roses make it through the winter months.

For those really needing to keep your roses warm there is one last trick that you need to learn for understanding how to prepare roses for winter. Place burlap around your rose batch to help protect the layers above the ground from becoming damaged. You should do this approximately two weeks after you’ve done your mounding. If your rose batch is somewhat larger it may be advised to do some pruning to make the wrapping process a little easier.

It can be difficult keeping roses each and every year when you live in very cold climates, but with the right protection you could help your roses make it through each year of cold. Understand how to prepare roses for winter and you’ll be on your way to having a beautiful rose batch every single year.
