Podiatry Worldwide
Podiatry is a very different profession in different countries around the world with very different scopes of practice and very different training programs. In most cases the scope of practice is reflected in how long the training is. The scope or extent of practice is also determined by the laws of each country.
In the United States of America, Podiatry is studied at a postgraduate level with an undergraduate degree needed. The podiatric medical degree is four years and most will do a 2 or 3 year residency after that. Podiatrists in the USA have full medical and surgical privileges of the foot and related problems. They have access to a full range of prescription drugs to manage the problem.
In the United Kingdom podiatry is practiced very differently. The podiatry course is a 3-4 year undergraduate degree but includes no surgery or advanced practice like it does in the USA. After graduating most begin working as a podiatrist. They then can enrol in the surgical or other training programs to get the surgical skills and other advanced practice skills. Also in the UK is another profession that have called themselves Foot Health Practitioners to get around the laws regarding the use of the name, Podiatrist and podiatry. The Health Professions Council is responsible for regulating Podiatrists in the UK, but the Foot Health Practitioners fall outside the regulations.
The situation in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa for podiatry is similar to the United Kingdom. Canada is a mixed bag, depending in which state you are in. In Asia and India, there are no podiatrists.
