Should You Use Grass Carp For Water Plant Control?

Posted on Saturday, October 31, 2009 in Brandnew

Governing the aquatic plants in a pond, or any body of water is very critical. Why is this you say? Well, since for whatever reason, you have decided that you don’t desire it there. No matter if these plants have generated a type of nuisance for swimmers, or have have clogged up the motor on your favorite boat, you want them gone, and there’s several ways to do this.

Of course you can utilize chemical substances, plastic lining, freezing, manual pulling them up, or perhaps even dye, but these are mighty strenuous, and there’s no promise that your pond, or even the fish, will ever be the same again after such an effort. Therefore it’s time to have a look at different means—techniques which will not damage you OR the pond.

Around nineteen sixty-three, a brand new fish was placed in the U.S. ecology, and that fish was known as the Grass Carp. This fish was deliberately introduced into our ecosystem for one reason of eliminating aquatic plants, and so far it’s done a great job. In the United States, A Grass Carp is often referred to as a White Amur, probably because the phrase Carp has negative interpretations here in the United States., and the name “Amur” refers to the river that this fish comes from, a river that runs the border between China and Russia.

The Grass Carp, is what’s known as an intrusive species, meaning that it will reproduce and overtake any ecosystem that it’s placed in (similar to humans), but fortunately science has progressed far, and while it required some time, and a lot of gene manipulation, sterilizing the Grass Carp became standard procedure all over the world so that the introduction does not hurt or destroy the local ecology.

Another thing to note, is that the Grass Carp doesn’t eat everything, of course it enjoys plant life, and would eat the vast majority of it, however as with human being, there are items that it enjoys more than others. A couple of the things that the Grass Carp will enjoy, are:

Coontail
Spikerush
Smartweed
Bladderwort
Bulrush
Water hyssop
Eelgrass

There are many additional grasses, and a quick trip to a library, an Internet search, or a consultation with a professional would immediately let you know what the grass carp will eat.

When purchased in bulk, Grass Carp is fairly cheap, at about $10-20 per fish, and that is perfectly reasonable considering how long it’ll last; surviving for around 10-11 years.

In certain states, you will be required to acquire a license before you place Grass Carp in any body of water, whether it is owned by you. To discover if this is necessary, talk to a game warden near you, or simply check the laws of your state, since that information is freely accessible to anyone that requires it.

Clearly, Grass Carp are an excellent alternative to using chemical compounds, or lining the pond with a plastic cover, because not just are they perfect for ridding you of unwanted plants, you must additionally remember that this is an interdependent relationship, you provide the thing they desire, and then they provide their services to you, keeping you from having to do this on your own. All in all, this is a good trade.
