Skype Sort of Goes Open Source
Skype has lately made clear that it will be released under an open source license. It started with a user’s request to Skype that they preferred a Mandriva Linux edition of the application, which didn’t exist . Skype soon decided that this person was not alone in his need, and that many groups were complaining of a lack of this edition. Skype eventually announced that they stepped into the open source market, which would permit Linux developers to influence the future of Skype to meet the needs of various people.
But make no mistake that this version is restricted to the Linux edition only, so Skype is not fully open source, but this is a beginning in entering the open source market. It also makes Skype the most important communication application for Linux geeks obtainable on the market.
Inconveniently there is no release date as yet and the in’s and outs of the software are a bit foggy. Linux has made clear that it is in development however, so let us hope they carry through on their statement. One also hopes this is only a first step and that development and sharing of an open source Skype will start to get to other platforms apart from the world of Linux as well.
While this development at Skype is appreciated by the open source customization community, Skype still have a very long way to go until they are anywhere near the likes of WordPress who are well known for the amount of WordPress customization you can do with their software.
Although overall reception is welcoming, there are developers who say that Skype’s open source development is not officially open source free software in the accepted sense. Primarily because it isn’t yet clear if only UI code will be open, while network code would stay locked up, thus making it seem as though Skype is hoping to seek support from the community for free without contributing anything in return. We will just have to wait and see what finally comes of this. All in all, Skype appears to be moving in the right direction, and we’ll have to see what the final product entails.
