Some Women Buy Shoes and Handbags, I Buy Horses for the Dude Ranch
I am just as excited to buy a new horse as I was when I got my first very own horse almost 55 years ago. Where some women buy expensive jewelry or shoes with matching handbags, I buy horses for our working dude ranch. Of course horses can’t be jammed in a wardrobe. They come complete with work – feeding, horse shoeing, veterinary care – all of which cost precious time and cash. But who wants a wardrobe filled of shoes when they could be out riding a good horse in wide-open spaces!
I purchased three horses from Texas. One is Poncho, our new ranch hand’s sorrel gelding – a neat little horse that should work out well here at our working guest ranch. Poncho will be herding some strays tomorrow – already working for his feed.
Then our ranch hand had a close friend who headed to university and wasn’t using his horse. It is a mare and I don’t normally buy those, but this mare is the sweetest-natured, gentlest horses that virtually anyone can ride easily – plus she rides well and ropes, etc. – good little ranch horse. She’s a little thin and needs a set of horseshoes but is going to be a keeper. The horse will be used a lot by dudes and dudettes on our guest ranch all through their Arizona Dude Ranch Vacations.
This mare isn’t a very tall mare but large enough and will be real pretty when all her winter months thick hair sheds off.
My third new horse is uncommon. He is a particularly well-bred big sorrel – a real good looking horse. Sad to say, his owner became sick and finally died leaving the widow with her hands full of two stallions, weanlings, yearlings, and broodmares. Meanwhile the fine horse became a gelding and was sent for training as a reiner. After training, the horse didn’t do much. He got trail ridden by a neighbor on occasion, but passed most of his time in pens or stalls. So he is 7 going on 3 in terms of training. But he is even tempered and pretty bright – and absolutely gorgeous. We expect he will turn out to be a fantastic guest ranch horse – he certainly has the potential.
I think my spouse has asked me to stop acquiring horses – at least for now.
